Job Title at LGBT Life Center: Housing Data Analyst
Where’d you come from and what’d you do there? I served 6 years in the Navy as an Analyst. Following that I decided to go back to school for a little bit before picking up a job managing an AT&T store. After the store I was fortunate enough to find myself at this wonderful organization.
I’m here to help you with: I’m here to help with data entry and analysis for the housing department. My responsibilities are expanding so my level of assistance with change with time.
How did you become interested in this job/type of work? I developed a love for data analysis in the Navy. I didn’t quite expect it, but I was good at it and enjoyed the work. Job satisfaction came with the knowledge that the work I was doing kept people safe which is very similar to the work I do now. I really enjoy this work because I get to work with the data knowing that what I do helps people find homes.
What’s an interesting thing about you that most people don’t know? I’m honestly a very open person so there really isn’t much that people don’t know about me, after getting to know me of course. If I had to pick something it would be that I have traveled a lot in my life. I have been all over this country, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa and the middle East.
What excites you about joining the LGBT Life Center Team? I get to join an organization of like-minded individuals to provide all kinds of support to our community. Before working here, I was attending transgender support groups that were and still are facilitated by the LGBT Life Center. These groups were really helpful in breaking me out of my shell. It’s exciting that I get to be a part of the team and contribute to helping others find themselves and be happy.
Lisa Szymanski
Nickname: Melisa Szymanski (Lisa). I am named after Elvis’ daughter. I know…ugh!
Job Title at LGBT Life Center: Housing Case Manager
Where’d you come from and what’d you do there? Where’d you come from and what’d you do there? I came from ODU! I am a Chicago native transplanted here as my wife is in the Navy. I actually did hair for 20 years then decided to go back to school and completely change my career!
I’m here to help you with: Housing assistance, whether it’s finding housing or figuring out if we can help cover costs to stabilize your situation.
How did you become interested in this job/type of work? I obtained my degree in Sociology major and and a minor in Women’s Studies and became obsessed with gender, racial, economic, healthcare and educational inequalities. I strive to fight for those underserved and lacking the resources in all sectors, so social work is where I feel is most useful in helping those lacking such resources!
