Honoring Bayard Rustin
In honor of his March 17 birthday, we reflect on the life of Bayard Rustin, civil rights strategist, advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. Though often overlooked in history, Rustin’s influence shaped movements for racial and economic justice in profound ways.
HIV/AIDS Awareness in March
March includes two important awareness days:
- National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (March 10)
- National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (March 20)
With nearly 28,000 Virginians living with HIV at the end of 2025, and higher rates in Southeast Virginia, this month is a reminder of why prevention, testing, and affirming care remain critical. Since 1989, LGBT Life Center has supported individuals living with HIV through testing, care, housing assistance, and more.
Volunteer Spotlight: Hannah
This month, we highlight Hannah, a Food Pantry volunteer whose passion for community and service shines through everything she does. From helping fill grocery bags to using her creative skills during the holidays, Hannah reminds us that volunteering is about connection as much as service.
New Collaboration: Humanities Behind Bars
We’re excited to announce a new partnership with Humanities Behind Bars, a Tidewater-based organization working to dismantle systems of oppression and center the voices of individuals impacted by incarceration.
In upcoming issues, readers can look forward to written contributions from LGBTQIA2S+ individuals currently incarcerated. This collaboration builds bridges, fosters solidarity, and affirms humanity across barriers.
