Transportation has always been more than a job for Eric Byrd. After 16 years driving for Hampton Roads Transit and working with older adults and people with disabilities, he has built a career around connecting with people, hearing their stories, and making sure they get where they need to go. Now, he brings that experience and plenty of joy to his new role as Transportation Coordinator at LGBT Life Center.
Name: Eric Byrd
Pronouns: He/Him
Job Title: Transportation Coordinator
Where’d you come from and what’d you do there? I’ve been into transportation all my life. I started driving buses at the age of 18 on the School Bus. I have driven the Transit Bus for HRT for 16 years. I really love working with people and talking with them.
When I drove the Transit Bus, I went and worked at a Senior Community. It was a joy to work with them, sit and talk with them, and hear their stories. I worked with Mentally Challenged Adults; it was something different and challenging at times, but I enjoyed working with them.
I’m here to help you with…I came here to work and to help people, and to transport them to their appointments.
How did you become interested in working at LGBT Life Center? I heard about the Life Center. I used to come and pick up Labs from my previous job and built a friendship with Daius Pryor. He told me to send him my resume, and now I’m here.
What excites you most about being at LGBT Life Center?
It’s a joy so far, and I really love my job here at the Lift Center. The people that work here are so nice and fun to work with. I’ve seen so many people that I used to drive around on the City Bus. It makes my heart proud and filled with joy when I see someone from back then.
