Name/Nickname: Rommel
Pronouns: He/Him
Job title: Director of Human Resources
Where’d you come from and what’d you do there? Born in Hawaii, after my parents left the military, we relocated to San Diego, CA. After leaving the corporate world, I relocated to Virginia where I have resided for the last 4 years. I have been in HR leadership for well over 14 years now and have explored different industries from banking, investments, retail, hospitals, transportation, and big tech, but come to realize that non-profit work is where I want to be.
I’m here to help you with…All things HR: policies and procedures, Paylocity, conflict resolution, tough conversations, Org/career planning, benefits, talent acquisitions, and of course, laughs!
How did you become interested in working at LGBTLifeCenter? It has always been both a personal goal and a career goal to either work for an organization that supported children with learning disabilities or being able to work for an organization that supported the LGBTQ+. When I learned that an opportunity became available at the LGBT Life Center, I had to act on it (even though it meant leaving a place I also loved).
What’s an interesting thing about you that most people don’t know?
- In my 20s I was such an adrenaline junkie and enjoyed skydiving, learning to fly both planes and helicopters, and scuba diving – ask me to do any of those today.. I’ll probably say pass lol.
- Even though I worked at the Virginia Zoo, fur gives me the ick. I adopted a cat to try and get over the fur ick.. but failed and somehow ended up adopted a second cat.
What excites you most about being at LGBT Life Center? Being able to be a support for those within the organization, working collaboratively with everyone to create tools and resources so staff may be able to better support the community and the mission of the organization.
